Short-Staffed City Planning Department
Fri Jan 4, 2008

Dear Friends,

I trust all is going well with you. You will recall at the People Plan Toronto meeting earlier this year, there was talk of getting a network of Neighbourhood Associations hooked up to deal with generic issues that affect us all. By each NA sending a message to its respective Councillor we can help raise the level of awareness more rapidly and hopefully arrest further degradation, and introduce corrective actions.

One such issue that requires urgent attention is the shortage of urban planners at City Hall that has left the department very short-handed.

Recent cost containment measures have resulted in a freeze on refilling critical staff vacancies. This has resulted in a severe overload on those left behind. Just in the central area there are only three planners working on more than 200 active files. This staff overloading is the best way to demoralise and destroy institutions. It takes years to rebuild institutional capacity.

I have attached a letter sent to our Councillors by YQNA. Could you please see if other NAs can also send similar letters to their Councillors?

With best wishes,
Braz Menezes for PPT
